The many uses of Tarpaulin (Tarp)

Tarpaulin (more commonly known as Tarp) is a specific sheet covering used in many outdoor recreation activities and industry. Manufactured from canvas or plastics it is waterproof/resistant and very tough.
Below are when and where to use Tarp material.

Tarps are seen as outdoor covers used for protecting property from damage by natural elements such as wind/rain or snow. In these circumstances, tarps made from polyethylene are recommended as they are water proof as opposed to tarp made from canvas which is only water resistant.

  • Truck loads are often needed to be covered whilst they are being transported; tarp is used almost exclusively for this purpose.
  • Covering the top of wood piles to promote drying of the wood
  • When used with a canopy or a structure of some kind, tarps are excellent temporary shelters. Tarps can also be used as floor covering in tents/outdoor/wet environments.
  • Temporary fix for when you have a leak in your roof or if there is a hole in your roof.
  • Tarp material can be used as a sail (though this is  not a permanent fix)
  • Tarp material cannot ‘’breathe’’. As a result it is a great insulator of heat. There are cases documented that when in emergency situations, victims of hypothermia have been wrapped in tarp material to stop them from dying.
  • A temporary show curtain or covering for wet environments.

Tips for buying a commercial Canopy

With such a wide range of commercial canopies to choose from, it can be easy to get confused. So to help, below is a quick guide on how to get the type of canopy covering you needed to fulfill a specific role?
  •       It is important to be clear on what you expect when it comes to choosing a commercial canopy for your business. Is the canopy going to be used yearlong or just for Summer/Winter?

  •          What type of Material are you using? Awnings are a cost effective option in that they can help you broaden your range of offerings. Retractable are the ultimate all year round solution. They can let the sun in or keep rain out depending on the weather conditions.

  •          Canopies come in a wide selection of UV protect fabric options that can also be made to protect against dirt, mound, sun and water. PVC designs are equally popular. Both options come in a wide choice of colors.

  •          Fabric choice for an awning or canopy depends on the application: interior or exterior canopies need different fabrics. Illuminated (back-lit) or standard commercial/residential project have different needs and costs associated as to whether they canopy is for personal use, industrial use or commercial use (i.e. a restaurant will need a flashy, stylistic canopy whilst a brick manufacturer will need only a canopy that is competent.

Observations on Canopy Replacement Covers

Canopy replacement covers are made from a material called Tarpaulins (Tarp for short). The material is strong, flexible and either waterproof or water resistant.

In days gone by, Tarp was made from cloths such as canvas. However since the creation of plastics in the mid-20th century, Tarp has been made from either polyethylene or polyester coated in Latex, Urethane or PVC, this has increased the strength of the material and allows it to be used not only domestically, but also on an industrial scale.

The main use of Tarps is too protect goods/materials from damage by natural elements (wind, rain or sunlight). Many transported goods are covered by Tarp whilst being moved from their place of manufacture to a particular market.

Due to its strength as well as ability to resistant damage by natural elements, many advertisements on billboards are made from Tarp material.

Interestingly, with the proper type of adhesive tape, it is possible to make a serviceable sail for small boats, though this is not a permanent solution.

Many manufacturers of Tarp (though not all) use color as an indication of the thickness (and therefore strength of Tarp material, examples include:

Blue is for light duty activities and used mostly for personal/domestic use.
Yellow, Orange and Green are all medium duty and are used both domestically and industrially.
Silver indicates a heavy duty Tarp and is used mostly industrially.

Brown Tarps are one of the strongest forms available and are used for the transport of unusually shaped loads on the back of trucks.

Tips When Using Your Commercial Canopy

Commercial canopies are a fantastic way to promote your business or brand. They can be used in almost any outdoor setting or event and can connect you directly with your clients. We thought it would be a good idea to share some tips with you on how best to use your commercial canopy.

Use It to Create an Outdoor Workshop

The last thing you want for your customers is for them to be stuck in a stuffy garage or shed during a lovely day. Using a commercial canopy allows you to connect with your client base in a much more relaxed environment. Commercial canopies are great for construction workers who would otherwise be spending most of their day in a closed environment.

Make Sure You Get a Canopy Permit

If you plan on using a commercial canopy for a business event or show, make sure that you check with the city about whether or not you need a permit. If you aren’t required to have a permit, you may still need to provide information about your commercial canopy and whether it is safe for use.

Use It as a Water Station

A great way to expose your brand and help out thirst athletes is by having a water station setup at the local marathon. It is a great way to interact with the community and show that you care about the athletes taking part in the race.

These are just a few tips, can you suggest anymore?

What Exactly Are Tarpaulins?

Tarpaulins are basically a piece of material that has been designed to be waterproof or water resistant. This is achieved by treating the material with a layer that prevents wetness. There is a wide range of uses for tarpaulins, everything from protecting you and your guests from bad weather conditions, to protecting your floor from paint as you renovate your home. You can find tarpaulins at most good hardware stores under the name “tarps” as they are usually called. You can purchase a tarpaulin at any size that suits you best; you can even get pieces cut so that you have various sizes for different uses.

Tarpaulins originate from palling, which is a type of heavy cloth that was most used for shelter. Palling was also used on ships and they would cover it with a thick tar to prevent moisture and wear and tear. The “tar palling” was born and evolved over the generations into what we have today. As technology improved, so did the manufacturing of tarpaulins. Most tarpaulins that are manufactured today are made from synthetic materials such as plastic.

Your typical tarpaulin is rather heavy in weight as it is designed to withstand heavy winds and harsh weather conditions. They are often produced in a woven pattern, making them rather coarse to the touch. Their edges are generally reinforced with grommets, making it far easier for the user to run rope for various ties. You will notice that tarpaulins are produced in bright colors, making them easily visible.

3 Tips When Setting Up Your Portable Garage

Now that you have purchased your very first portable garage, you can protect your vehicles from the harsh weather conditions. You will be very pleased at how much longer your vehicles will last now that it is under cover. This being said, all the great benefits that you will get from your portable garage, there are also a few things that you need to keep in mind when you decide to put it up and use it.

 Keep A Good Distance

When you set up your portable garage, make sure that it is a safe enough distance from your home. Now you are probably saying to yourself that this doesn’t make sense. Surely I would want my portable garage to be as close to my house as possible so that I can get in and out without getting wet. As much as this is true, you don’t want to have the risk of fires catching onto your house. If your vehicle suddenly catches fire for some reason, the portable garage will catch too.
Ventilation
If you like getting your car started for a while before hopping in; make sure to have a good flow of air going through your portable garage. Just like in a closed garage, fumes and gases can build up, which is a healthy risk for the driver.

Storage

While storing your vehicle inside your portable garage is fine, try not to store other valuable that are easily taken. If someone is observing your property and know of valuable items inside, they will be able to get in.
